Configurable tools — overview
AllBesides the built-in tools, the assistant can be connected to your own data sources. Administrators set up such configurable tools in the Administration → Configured tools tab; they only appear in chat and for agents afterwards.
Four configurable kinds
Section titled “Four configurable kinds”| Kind | What the assistant does with it | Setup |
|---|---|---|
| SQL data source | Run a fixed, parameterized query against a database and use the result as a table. | Set up a SQL data source as a tool |
| HTTP API | Call a fixed endpoint; the assistant only fills in the parameters. | Set up an HTTP API as a tool |
| Mailbox | Search, read and (optionally) send from a specific account. | Set up a mailbox as a tool |
| Folder (desktop) | Search and read (optionally write) within a fixed root folder. | Set up a folder as a tool |
How configurable tools are enabled
Section titled “How configurable tools are enabled”Per tool, administrators decide via switches whether it is active and where it may be used — in chat and/or for agents. Which tools a user may use is set per user on the Access tab: by default everyone sees every active tool; with Restrict to selected tools only the ticked ones. This applies to direct calls in chat — an agent runs the tools of its own configuration regardless.
Which rights a connection works with in the target system is set at setup time — CompanyWizard can only do what the stored account is allowed to do. → Permissions for connected tools
PII: two switches, two directions
Section titled “PII: two switches, two directions”Configured tools exchange data with a target outside CompanyWizard. Each tool therefore has two independent switches — they are easily confused:
- PII exemption — the tool’s results come back unredacted instead of being pseudonymized (direction: inbound).
- Trusted target — the call’s arguments are re-identified, so the target receives original PII (direction: outbound). Off by default.

MCP — the third source
Section titled “MCP — the third source”Tools can additionally come from connected MCP servers. That is a separate interface and is described not here but in the concepts and configuration:
- MCP in both directions — what MCP is and which direction it works in
- Admin tab: External tools (MCP) + OAuth · Connect an MCP server
