The assistant's tools — overview & model
UserThe AI assistant doesn’t just answer from what it knows — it acts: it searches vaults, reads documents, writes notes, calls APIs. For that it has tools. This area is the catalog: which tools exist, what they are for, and how administrators set up the configurable ones. This page explains the mental model first — the detailed catalogs follow in the other articles.
Three sources of tools
Section titled “Three sources of tools”Every tool comes from one of three sources:
- Built-in — shipped with CompanyWizard and available without setup: Knowledge & vaults, workspace & Git, email, Office & documents, web, skills & memory. These are described by the Tools: … articles in this area.
- Self-configured — data sources connected by administrators: a SQL database, an HTTP API, a mailbox or a folder. They only appear once they have been set up. → Configurable tools — overview
- External via MCP — tools from connected MCP servers. MCP is a separate interface and is covered in the concepts, not here. → MCP in both directions · Connect an MCP server
Read, write — and the dry run
Section titled “Read, write — and the dry run”Tools are distinguished by their effect:
- Read — the assistant retrieves information (search, read, list). Reading steps change nothing.
- Write — the assistant changes something (create, update, move, delete, send). Writing steps are shown to you before they run; in a dry run you see what would happen without it happening.
In the catalog tables, each tool is marked as read or write.
Web or desktop — not everything is available everywhere
Section titled “Web or desktop — not everything is available everywhere”Which tools are available depends on the installation. In particular the workspace & Git tools exist only in the desktop edition, because they access local files. The catalogs mark this per tool as Available: always / desktop / when configured. → Two deployment modes — web vs. desktop
Your data stays protected
Section titled “Your data stays protected”Before the assistant processes a read result, detected personal data is pseudonymized — the PII shield applies without you having to do anything, as long as it is switched on. A few built-in tools (such as reading from the workspace) are deliberately exempt so that, for example, file names are preserved. → The PII shield
