Set up a frontier image model with a key of your own
AdminThe Managed AI image models cover simple motifs. For demanding images — text in images, photorealism, complex compositions — additionally set up a frontier model such as Nano Banana Pro (Google) or GPT Image (OpenAI) with a key of your own. It is then offered in the image generator beside the Managed AI models. → Image generator: image quality and frontier models
Prerequisites
Section titled “Prerequisites”- You are an administrator.
- An account with Google (Gemini API) or OpenAI (API platform) for which you may create an API key.
- Settle first: conclude a data processing agreement (DPA) under Art. 28 GDPR with the provider — both offer a Data Processing Addendum. With Google it applies to paid use of the Gemini API; use billing there rather than the free quota alone. The legal basis and third-country transfer are your responsibility, not evanto’s. → GDPR & data processing agreement
Step by step
Section titled “Step by step”- Open Quick Add — Administration → Models → Quick Add.
- Choose a provider — the Google Gemini or OpenAI card.
- Connect — in the “Connect Google Gemini” or “Connect OpenAI” step, Get your API key takes you straight to the provider’s key management (Google AI Studio or the OpenAI platform). Create the key there, enter it here and Test connection.
- Choose models — under Image generation, tick the image model: Nano Banana Pro for Google, GPT Image 2 (or a GPT Image 2.5 variant) for OpenAI. The recommended model is preselected as long as the provider serves it for your key; otherwise it is marked “not in listing”. You do not need this provider’s chat or embedding models for it.
- Create provider — creates the account with the ticked models.
- Release it to your users — if you have Managed AI and Only Managed-AI models is switched on for Images, switch it off for Images. Chat can stay on. → Only Managed-AI models
- Check — in the image generator, pick the new provider and model. The model list marks it as External provider (own key).
Good to know
Section titled “Good to know”- Reference images without personal data. PII protection replaces detected names in the prompt with placeholders, for the image provider too; it does not check reference images. Tell your users. → Data protection with external image providers
- Billed by the provider. Images made with a key of your own do not count against the Managed AI monthly budget; they run on your invoice from Google or OpenAI — and keep working when the budget is used up.
- Enhance Prompt still uses a text model, not the new image model. With Only Managed-AI models → Images off, that is a model with the Image prompt optimization modality if you have created one, otherwise your default chat model.
- “No usable image model” in the image generator means none is configured, or the Only Managed-AI models → Images switch hides your account. Check steps 5 and 6.
