Where does CompanyWizard save documents?

User

Applies from the CompanyWizard update after version 0.79. In older versions, created files always land in the default output folder, and the file chips are missing.

When the assistant creates a file in chat — a document, a presentation, a spreadsheet, a filled-in Word form or a saved email attachment —, the desktop app stores it on your computer. Where it goes follows a fixed rule.

  1. If a working folder is attached to the chat, the file lands there. This also applies in Plan mode, because an existing file is never overwritten: if report.csv already exists, the new file is called report-2.csv, then report-3.csv and so on.
  2. Otherwise it lands in the output folder. The default is Documents → CompanyWizard → Documents in your user profile (macOS: ~/Documents/CompanyWizard/Documents, Windows: Documents\CompanyWizard\Documents). Here, too, files are numbered instead of overwritten.

If the requested file name cannot be used inside the working folder, the app also falls back to the output folder. If it cannot create the default folder at all, it creates it in the CompanyWizard data directory instead — the folder that actually applies is shown on the card in the system settings (see below).

You attach a working folder with the Working folder button in the chat’s input area → Tools: workspace & Git (desktop).

ToolResult
Write document (write_document).csv, .json, .xml, .md or .txt
Create presentation (CreatePresentation).pptx
Create spreadsheet (CreateSpreadsheet).xlsx
Fill Word template (FillWordTemplate).docx, optionally also .pdf
Download attachment (DownloadMailAttachment)the attachment in its original format

Below the answer, a chip with the file name appears for every file created; hover over it to see the full path. When the assistant fills in a Word template with a PDF, you see two chips — one for the Word document, one for the PDF.

  • Open — opens the file in the matching program. This button only exists for document types: .csv, .json, .xml, .md, .txt, .pptx, .xlsx, .docx and .pdf.
  • Show in folder — shows the file in Finder or Explorer. This button is always there, including for an email attachment that CompanyWizard does not launch itself for security reasons (an executable file, for example).

The chips stay: when you reopen the conversation later, they are still below the answer.

If a click does not work, the app tells you why:

  • “The file no longer exists: …” — the file has been moved or deleted in the meantime.
  • “This file type is not opened directly. Use “Show in folder”: …”
  • “The file could not be opened: …” — usually there is no program for this file type.

Under Administration → System settings, the Output folder for documents card shows the folder currently in use.

  • Choose folder… — set a different folder.
  • Restore default — go back to the default folder. The button only appears when a custom folder is set.
  • Open folder — show the folder in Finder or Explorer.

Good to know:

  • The setting applies per computer and takes effect from the next message — no restart needed.
  • Pairing with a server does not overwrite it; a paired desktop also saves files on its own computer.
  • The app rejects a folder it cannot write to and gives the reason: “The folder ”…” cannot be used: …”. The previous folder then stays active.
  • If the configured folder is not reachable at startup (a disconnected network drive, for example), the default folder applies and the card shows: “The configured folder ”…” was not available at startup; the default folder is used.”
  • If the folder cannot be shown, you see “The folder could not be opened: …”.
  • Export answer (Word, PDF, PowerPoint, Excel) is something else: you trigger this export yourself, and in the desktop app the file lands in your Downloads folder → Export an answer as Word or PDF.
  • The web edition has neither a working folder nor an output folder: documents, presentations and spreadsheets the assistant creates are offered in the chat as a download link.
